Königstein Fortress
Königstein Fortress sits 240 metres above the Elbe on one of the region's most distinctive table mountains. Its 9.5-hectare rock plateau holds more than 50 buildings spanning five centuries — from a late-Gothic chapel to the deepest well in Saxony. From the ramparts the view stretches across the whole Elbe valley, the Lilienstein and the table mountains of Saxon Switzerland.
From your holiday apartment in Königstein the climb up is only minutes away. If you'd rather not walk, the fortress shuttle runs from the car park. It's worth a visit in any season — the plateau is especially beautiful early in the morning, when mist still lingers in the valley.

Getting here & best time to visit
Königstein sits directly on the S1 suburban train line (Dresden–Bad Schandau), which follows the Elbe valley — so you can reach many of the finest starting points without a car. By car you're there in around 45 minutes from Dresden via the A17 motorway and the B172. The Elbe ferry connects Königstein with the opposite bank and the Lilienstein.
When is the best time?
Saxon Switzerland is rewarding in every season. May to June and September to October are considered the finest hiking months: mild weather, clear long-distance views and fewer crowds than in high summer. In winter mist often fills the valley while the table mountains stand in the sun — one of the most atmospheric times for photography.
