Saxon Switzerland in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is one of the best places for hiking in Germany — and deservedly so. More than 1,200 kilometres of marked trails wind through a world of sandstone towers, deep gorges and panoramic table mountains. Königstein sits right in the middle and is one of the most practical bases: many walks start in the town itself or a short suburban-train ride away.
The Malerweg — Germany's most beautiful trail
The Malerweg (Painters' Way) is considered one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in Germany. Over roughly 116 kilometres in eight stages it follows the footsteps of the Romantic painters who made the Elbe Sandstone Mountains famous in the 19th century — among them Caspar David Friedrich. The route passes the region's most spectacular viewpoints, and Königstein lies right on it.
You don't have to walk the Malerweg in one go: from your holiday apartment you can hike individual stages as day trips and combine them easily with the train or the ferry — in the evening you're back in your apartment, with a hot tub waiting on the rooftop terrace.
The best hikes from Königstein
- Königstein Fortress & Königsnase — a short, view-rich circular walk right above the town, ideal for your first day.
- Lilienstein — the striking table mountain opposite, reached by the Elbe ferry, with one of the best all-round views in the region.
- Bastei & Schwedenlöcher — the classic walk to the Bastei Bridge, combined with an atmospheric gorge hike.
- Pfaffenstein & Barbarine — a table mountain with a rock needle and a lookout tower, family-friendly and less crowded.
- Kuhstall & Affensteine — the largest rock gate in the region, deep in the back of the national park.
Hiking with the family

Practical tips
- Sturdy hiking boots with a good grip — the sandstone can be slippery when wet.
- The S1 suburban train links the starting points along the Elbe valley; often included with the guest card.
- Best hiking months: May/June and September/October — clear views and pleasant temperatures.
- Please keep to the marked paths — much of the area is national park and strictly protected.
